Year 6

Our Year 6 students recently explored the powerful world of street art and graffiti, drawing inspiration from the work of Banksy. Through this exciting visual arts unit, students discovered how street artists use imagery and text to communicate messages about identity, community, and social issues.

As part of their learning, students studied a range of typography styles and lettering techniques, analysing how artists use shape, colour, line, scale, and composition to create expressive and impactful designs. They explored how typography can transform simple words into powerful visual statements.

Applying their knowledge, students designed and created their own graffiti-inspired name artworks using mixed media techniques. They combined:

  • Hand-painted lettering styles
  • Textured backgrounds
  • Layered materials
  • Simple 3D elements for depth and impact

This hands-on project supported the Cambridge Curriculum for Art & Design, encouraging:

  • Creative thinking
  • Technical skill development
  • Artistic experimentation
  • Thoughtful design choices
  • Personal expression through visual storytelling

By exploring contemporary street art, students developed a deeper understanding of how art connects to real-world culture and identity.
